“It is the Wild West out here”

This research builds on the emerging body of literature investigating implications changing land tenure relations in Prairie Provinces, where over 70% Canada’s farmland is located. Through an analysis survey data collected 2019 from 400 grain farmers, we address following questions: How are farmers experiencing patterns and control at local level? What challenges opportunities do face these markets? And, how has entry new actors (farmland investors) changed relationships between landlords tenants? Our findings suggest that those who witnessing financialization their regions view this phenomenon with alarm. Furthermore, show rent corporate investors more often subject to landlord influence production practices pay higher rental rates than other types. Concern about concentration widespread among a variety negative effects identified, including increased competition decline communities. We recommend future probe different investor types (individual vs. and/or institutional) engage markets, examine gender dimensions landlord-tenant relations, analyses challenge current iteration private property regime.
